Art Theory: BVA 313 - 12/02/2019

Project Mapping

My key idea of creating this year's final project was developed last year's theoretical class, a topic is discovering Self-Identity specifying in cultural differences. This issue provokes my interest as it uncovers many issues that I am encountering right now. By doing this research, I am positive that understanding of my own culture will more easy for me.

I was born on the 3rd of December 1997, in Malaysia, Sabah. Growing up as the Fourth Generation of Chinese descendants in Malaysia was not a big deal when I was young. But as time goes by I sometimes felt the difference between different races in my country. It comes to a question of acceptance between different races. Am I really consider as a Malaysian? Why am I called a Chinese Malaysian? Can I be known as a Chinese too? By the end of this year, I wanted to present to my audience about my discovery of my Self Identity.

Creating my final work requires many theoretical aspects. I will be looking in depths on Cultural Identity,  specifically race, the relationship between the audiences and space surrounding the artwork.

My mind theorist for last year was Amelia Jones. She highlighted many of her point of view on  Individual Identity. Judith Butler, one of my favorite, also talks about Identity. Using my knowledge from last year I wanted to discover more theorist on Cultural Identity, knowing why there is this social stage on race.
