Week Three One-On-One with Kathryn

My question: How by uncovering my cultural identity through drawings reflects cultural acceptance in nowadays society?

My idea of using Cinderella story from three different countries: China (Yeh Xian), Malaysia (Bawang Putih Bawang Merah) and European (Cendrillon) are to show the similarity moral value, although it's from a different country. Then the story will be combined into one. by doing this it will convey the message of acceptance in the different community when each Cinderella found they're happily ever after in a different country and era too!

Storyboarding for each Cinderella

Merging three into the concept of acceptance in diversity.

Mixed marriage in the end, rather than pairing each with their initial prince charming. Meaning: Three of the story runs together, with the same timing of tragedy and happiness. Their dimension started to change when their spiritual guardian aids them in their misery.  Yeh Xian went to rides on the Malay swing, Cendrillon met the Prince in the Chinese New Year ball, Bawang Putih dance with the prince in a majestic castle.
When midnight struck, everyone was to rush back home, while in this journey, they eventually bump into each other. Suddenly realized their identity has been mixed up, but willing to accept.

Since my final work is on creating a sequence of illustrations, I will have to simplify my idea and stick with comparing a specific situation among the three Cinderella. Example: Cinderella's godmother magically turns her dress into a beautiful grown with her iconic glass slipper; Yeh Xian was given a pair of Golden Slippers and this elegant dress from Han dynasty form her Spiritual Guardian; A magic swing appears where Bawang Putih has buried her mother (the Goldern Fish) under an enormous tree. * if I still wanted to stick with my own story, this will be a great comparison.

Keep in mind to only focus on a specific aspect eg Cultural Identity.

Creating my first series of illustration will be a great experiment to my audience on my first exhibition and critiques. If my audience is able to identify the differences, then I am ready to elaborate on my work.

Agenda for Week 4 One-on-One

  1. Clarify my aim of the story.
  2. What I wanted to display on the first exhibition.
  3. Rough sketches.
