Title:
This final year project, "The Three Cinderellas", depicts three different cinderella from three different country: China, Europe, and Malaysia. The main plot of cinderella coming from three countries shows the same value, the story typically starts with an orphan who is mistreated by her stepmother and her stepsisters and must then prove herself as the rightful bride of royalty through passing the slipper test after accidentally leaving a slipper behind in the banquet. (Friedman, 2010). I wanted to reflect the similarity of human begin through 'Cinderella' despite our belief, culture and ethnicity.
Proposed key question:
My question for this project “Can the fairy tale story “Cinderella” from three different cultures: Chinese, Malay and European, raise awareness of the similarities between these cultures through illustration and therefore promote the attributes of cultural diversity?” Fairy tales have been around our since d' Aulnoy coined the term of "fairy tale" in 1679. As time has passed, the meaning of "fairy tale" has changed, as the author of “The Irresistible Fairy Tale”, Jack Zipes clarifies "...the fairy tale was first a simple, imaginative oral tale containing magical and miraculous elements and was related to the belief system, values, rites, and experiences of pagan peoples." What I mean by raising awareness and how i think the work can promote the attributes of cultural diversity (The good things, the good side. Common sides between story and real life). In "The Three Cinderellas", I will be comparing the three versions of Cinderella in three familiar scenarios through illustration that highlights: The grief news (Description), A new hope, and The Happily ever after. How idea of fairytale connects with your idea about technology....Understanding how technology HOW WILL YR PROJECT USE TECHNOLOGY is a major aspect in connecting people from all around the world into one platform, I will use this opportunity to exhibit my work and connect people starting from the Southern Institute of Techonology (SIT) main campus.
Methodology:
Two methodologies are involve shaping my project: heuristic research and practice-based-research.Heuristic inquiry is a process that begins with a question or problem which the researcher seeks to illuminate or answer. Practice-based research is the prefect methodology for this approach. It is an original investigation undertaken to gain new knowledge, partly by means of practice and the outcomes of that practice. For practice-based researchers, making an artifact is pivotal, and the insights from making, reflecting and evaluating may be fed back directly into the artifact itself.(Cite) The topic of diversity is inspired from where I came from, Malaysia. Malaysia is a very diversified country. Her population is made up of 50 percent ethnic Malay, 23 percent Chinese with Indians and indigenous people as the remainder. However, the multi-ethnic country gives rise to cultural tension since the 1969-anti Chinese riot took place amidst growing frustration towards the success of Chinese in their economy compared to the Malays, leading to nowadays problem of discrimination between different ethnicity. (Webster, 2010) YR WRK FOCUSES ON THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN CULTURES RATHER THAN THE DIFFERENCES.
My project also requires some research on topics such as diversity, fairy tales and human desire. These researches are very helpful in developing my ideas on "The Three Cinderellas”, especially doing research and drawings triggers more innovative ideas.
Documentation:
The habit of having an active documentation is helpful when coming to my final year project. (Blogging researcher: the blog helps the researcher share with others, it provides a room for creativity, and it makes the researcher feel connected. These motivations will be described and discussed below.)
