Art Theory: BVA 313 - 15/09/2019 (Term 3 presentation)

This presentation reflects the question: How do Chinese Malaysian feel when living in Malaysia?

Question:

The intention of presenting this topic is to investigate biculturalism within a person's identity.
- Curios are we Chinese or Malaysian?
- Why do Chinese Malaysians think in that way and why do most of their parents encourage their children to never come back?
- Are we really a tread? Where is the place that I can call "home"? [Feelings of belonging]

Key Theoretical Text:

Chinese diaspora: Malaysia (BBC)
-       But while some Chinese Malaysians see themselves as "more Chinese than the Chinese", others like graphic designer Joe Lam see themselves as "global Malaysians" - drawing on the country's mix of Malay, Indian, European and Chinese influences.
-       •“Especially [for the] younger generation, which was born after independence in 1957, we no longer see China as the motherland," said Jadryn Loo.
-       Chinese Identities in Malaysia. Southeast Asian Journal of Social Science
-       •In China, a Cantonese and a Hakka belong to different ethnic groups, but in Malaysia, all the Chinese see themselves as belonging to one ethnic group vis-à-vis the Malays and other Malaysians, and the Cantonese and Hakka are usually described as ‘dialect groups’ or ‘speech-groups”.

2) Yinka Shonibare:
-       ‘The Swing’ is an important work that combines British colonial elements, while being playful and humorous. Leaving out both the husband and lover of the mistress in the painting opens up a discussion: what is meant by this? Perhaps, the audience is now the one looking up the woman’s skirt.
-       His use of Dutch wax fabrics subscribes to that element of playfulness; they are bright, beautiful fabrics that make Shonibare’s artworks stand out immensely. And not only that: they attest to Shonibare’s hybrid identity and his interest in using a fabric that carries a history.

Technology:
-       In the coming era, technology will al- low us to see more clearly using data and to think completely differently about age-old problems both large and small.
-       The new era of computing, just emerging, will be one of cognitive sys- tems. Instead of being programmed by humans, computers will “learn” from their interactions with data and people, and they will adapt, like the brain, to many parallel connections among data streams at once, gen- erating patterns, observations, and insights.

The current state of work:
-       Reflecting biculturalism into my work. However, the statement doesn’t fit well into the project. Will look for something to adjust this aspect.
